A few years ago, when JL Fields left the Westchester area, I got to take over her column at the Journal News’ Small Bites column, I Eat Plants. It was awesome, having a dedicated vegan column for vegan things in Westchester! Sadly, a couple of years ago, after a number of problems with the website and some personnel changes, they decided to shut all of Small Bites down. To be fair, my heart wasn’t in it by the end; clearly, I blog as a hobby, and having a regular blogging schedule became very difficult to keep up with. I also felt like I was covering the same things over and over again.
In other words, I’m not a great journalist. 🙂 Finding the new thing out there was something that just got beyond me (I do have a thriving career in healthcare, which I love, but it doesn’t leave a lot of time for other things).
But since then, turns out Westchester is getting more and more vegan friendly, and it’s pretty amazing!
I think I’ll be writing more over the next month or two, but today something amazing happened. Westchester had it’s first Vegan Pop-Up Shop.
As it turns out I ended up getting here early today, after making a mistake in my schedule. Turns out that was a good thing, because I was towards the head of the line, and this place was insane!
Screamer’s Pizza was a huge draw here. True to their traveling form, they did have a special slice not on the regular menu, the BBQ Tempeh. I managed to get a slice of each to go. They were a bit more expensive than they usually go for in the Brooklyn store, but I saved $11.50 on Triboro Brigde tolls, so I made out.
A friend of mine posted in the Westchester NY Veggie EatUp group that Screamer’s had run out of pizza by 1PM. Note, this started at 12PM. Insanity!
Just to give you an idea, this is what it looked like with people inside!
One of my favorite things was this gorgeous charcuterie plate from Hunted Gatherer Foods. I had not heard of them before, but I hope I see them a lot more places!
Peaceful Provisions is a vendor that I’ve encountered before at various vegan events. Looking at their website, I’m guessing that they are actually a Westchester-based business, which is super cool. They also have an awesome Westchester vegan guide on their wesbite, so I’m so glad I learned that today! Many of the places I’m familiar with, but there’s a bunch I didn’t know!
They were actually hosting (of at least leading the social media). They had some amazing foods today, and I’m glad to have been able to grab a couple of their donuts!
I was in and out pretty quickly- I grabbed a few things to go, and wanted to get out of the crowd. Below was the line as I was leaving- it was almost all the way down the block.
So clearly, this was a success, and I hope that they do it again.
Like I said earlier, there have been some amazing developments in the vegan space in Westchester, and I’m so glad I live here right now- and I’m so glad there are vegans like the people at Peaceful Provisions who are making events like this happen.
