Squirrel Sounds!

I was walking down the street, and heard a strange sound coming from a tree. I stopped, and right at eye level, there was a squirrel sitting in the tree, making this almost crying like sound. It didn’t appear to be hurt in any obvious way. It looked right at me for a moment or two, and then scrambled up to a higher branch when someone else walked by. At that point I decided to capture the sound, because I had no idea what it was all about. It sounded a little sad!

Of course, you can’t actually see the squirrel, but it is up there!

    That's a new one!

This last spring we were startled to hear squirrels in New Haven barking – a defensive noise, I think. One on Elm, near Rudy's, the other in the courtyard of our building.

Squirrels have a variety of "alarm" sounds they make when a predator is around or when they're defending their territory against another squirrel.
It sounds like this one was upset about something in the vicinity and was letting everyone who could hear it know he/she was ticked off or feeling defensive. They're a bit odd sounding the first time you notice.
Most of the time any animal will make an alarm sound only when they want to alert others or scare something away.
